The yacht essentials. Tips for an enjoyable stay on a superyacht
Your next superyacht adventure awaits, but what essentials should you pack and what guidelines should you follow for yacht etiquette?
Pack for every occasion
Embark with an open mind and cover all bases, but be wary of taking too much. The one absolute-must-have is the swimsuit. Pack as many as you think necessary. Soft-sided bags are easier to carry and handle. Sunglasses, hats and sun protection are essential. However even if you’re traveling during the summer, there are still cool nights so you need a light jacket. Also consider outfits for the unexpected excursions or the last minute invites for cocktails.
Bring the necessary legal documents
Passports and visas (if required) are essential if you are traveling outside your home country. Additionally, remember to carry evidence of your reservation.
Pay attention to safety
The captain’s and the crew’s ultimate goal is to secure your safety and ensure you’re having an enjoyable voyage.
At the beginning of your trip, the crew will conduct a safety briefing. Pay close attention and ask questions if anything is unclear. Familiarize yourself with safety equipment and emergency procedures, including life jackets and evacuation plans.
Take the time to listen to the personnel’s instructions as these might be critical for the itinerary.
Seasickness
If you're prone to seasickness, come prepared. Consult a medical professional beforehand and carry medication recommended for seasickness. Additionally, staying hydrated can help alleviate symptoms.
Communicate with your chartering expert and the crew
If you have any medical conditions, dietary requirements or points worth sharing, please communicate these to our team before departure. The same applies to last minute changes while you are aboard. Make sure the captain is involved in any short notice change of plans, including itinerary or arranging dinner for additional guests.
The no-shoes policy
It is generally recommended to walk barefoot on a yacht to prevent maintenance issues and potential damage caused by heels and hard-soled shoes. Alternatively, if necessary, you may wear soft-sole shoes as long as they are brand new and haven't been worn outside the vessel.
Tips for the crew
The vessel’s employees are assigned to various serious tasks and they should be treated with respect. The crew gratuity is customary in case they have met or exceeded your expectations. The standard practice is to offer around 15% of the total yacht chartering rate as a tip.
Respect the rules
Illegal activities are not tolerated, and penalties may be imposed on the yacht owner and captain. In most cases smoking is prohibited inside the cabins, but there are designated areas on one of the decks where clients can enjoy their cigars.
Remember, each superyacht may have its own specific rules and guidelines, so it's essential to communicate with the crew and be respectful of their instructions throughout your journey.
